Many huge boulders were deposited in this area during the Mindel glaciation (transportet with ice and water by the river Rhine), 300,000-700,000 years ago. Until the beginning of this century they were commercially "mined" in quarries. The drift block consists of quarzite and weighs 28 tonnes. The stone was transported at this point with a heavy-duty crane in 1995.
