Built in the style of an English "smock" mill, the Old East Mill was built in 1800 in Orleans, Massachusetts (more than 30 miles to the east of where it sits today). In 1819, the windmill was moved a short distance in Orleans in order to bring it closer to grain producing areas and boat landing sites. In 1968, the mill was dismantled and driven from Orleans to Sandwich, where it stands today on the grounds of the Heritage Museums and Gardens.
Museum visitors are allowed inside the ground level of the windmill.
