The current Sunshine Skyway Bridge construction began in 1982 following a 1980 collision from a freight ship on the previous bridge. Dedicated February 1987, the bridge is constructed of steel and concrete. Steel cables clad in 84 9-inch steel tubes along the center line of the bridge support the main span. It's total length is 4.14 miles (21,877 feet) and is maintained by FDOT.
