The anchor was discovered during an anchor maneuver with the navy ship BONN at the naval base Wilhelmshaven in October 2013. It took 6 hours to recover the anchor. As it turned out later, the almost eight-ton "Kieler Riese" originally belonged to a ship of the "Kaiserliche Werft Kiel". It dates from the year 1913. In the year 2014 the anchor was officially handed over to the partner city Bonn.
