The Indian River Inlet Bridge, also known as the Charles Cullen Bridge, is a cable-stayed suspension bridge.
It is 2600-ft long, 108-ft wide, with the longest span of 950-ft. The underside clearance is 45-ft. Built by Skanska Corporation, it was started in 2008, and opened in January 2012, and officially completed on May 2012, at a cost of $150 million.
Located approximately halfway between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach, it carries Delaware Highway 1 over the Indian River Inlet, and is the centerpiece of Delaware Seashore State Park. It accommodates automotive traffic, but has an isolated lane for bicycle and pedestrian traffic also.
After a vote from the local communities, it was decided that the official coloring of the bridge will be blue. The cables of the bridge are colored blue. At nightfall, the bridge is illuminated blue with LED spotlights, both on the cables and the sides of the pylons. The whole bridge is illuminated until midnight, then the cable spotlights turn off. The pylon spotlights remain on until dawn.
