Citizens began working on the idea of a local fire department in 1953. Later in 1954, the Harrisburg Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

In close proximity to Charlotte and Concord, the town grew rapidly. Over the years to accomodate safety and fire protection, the growth of the department was a sure thing. It has evolved into a modern fire department with three station and a paid staff supplemented by a great group of volunteers.
