The sign reads:
"From Boom to Bust to Boom
Monterey was the world's sardine capital.
In the 1930s sardines were big business.
Canneries lined the street until sardine
populations plunged and the industry went bust
in the early 1950s. Today, squid is the bay's biggest
fishery, and tourism is Cannery Row's major
industry. The bounty of sea life comes from a
mingling of northern and southern species and
from spring and summer nutrient-rich waters.
Look on the beach below for concrete
pilings - the remains of a sardine
cannery. From 1935 to 1940, Cannery
Row's sardine plants processed over
200,000 tons of fish a year, making this
Monterey's smelliest street."
