Golden Leaves is the name of this work by artist Timothy Schmalz unveiled in Tudhope Park, Orillia, Ontario in October 2015. It commemorates the body of work by international artist Gordon Lightfoot in the folk rock singer's home town. The sculpture incorporates many maple leaves, each representing a song from an album which contained many of Lightfoot's best known hits, such as "Sundown", "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "If You Could Read My Mind." Gordon is captured strumming away on his guitar while in the lotus position with this arbour of leaves surrounding him like a halo. Pretty groovy! At one time Lightfoot sang in a local church choir before fronting for rock bands in Toronto and recording in Los Angeles. After topping the charts in the US and being nominated on multiple occasions for Grammy awards he has also been elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. It is fitting this monument on the shores of Lake Couchiching be at the location of the annual Mariposa Folk Festival.
