Given that Yarmouth is a seacoast town, famous as a shipbuilding, fishing and shipping town, a nautical flagpole in their war memorial park seems a natural addition. The pole flies the flags of Canada, Nova Scotia and the Town of Yarmouth. For those unfamiliar with these flags, the Nova Scotia flag has blue crosses, while the Town of Yarmouth flag has red crosses. Park, Library, memorial and flagpole are at 405 Main Street, just north of Parade Street and across Main Street from Frost Park, the best known and oldest park in the town. It was originally a burial ground, begun in 1766.
Originally a World War I memorial, it was unveiled on June 9th, 1923, with over $10,000 having been collected toward its $16,500 cost. It had been the Local Council of Women which provided the impetus for its creation. Of solid granite, standing on a concrete base, the memorial was inscribed with the 173 names of men of Yarmouth County who had fallen in the war. Later, plaques for World War II and the Korean War, along with the names of the dead, were added.
