MADRESSILVA
1889 - 1979
In this house lived the Paderne poet Maria da Conceicao Eloi for the last years of her life. Honeysuckle. 1889 - 1979
Maria da Conceição Eloi was one of four Marias who founded the Algarve publication Avezinha, Little Bird, on 21st February, 1921. Avezinha was at first a handwritten monthly but soon became a printed edition. It contained short stories and poems from the founders and later from other women, all had 'flower' pseudonyms such as camellia, gardenia, daisy, orchid, etc. Maria da Conceição Eloi's was Honeysuckle.
Her co-founders were Maria Feliciana Marim Marques, Violet, Maria do Espírito Santo Correia, Hortensia , and Maria da Conceição Costa Mendes, Rose.
Until 1936 the newspaper was printed monthly when it was suspended only to br resurected in 1977 with Maria as director. In April 1983 the newspaper began to be published every two weeks and in January 1984, weekly. It is still published and is available on Facebook.
There is some doubt as to the birth year of Maria, the plaque gives 1889, Bibliotecas Municipais do Porto gives it as 1898.
