A placard inside the Aquarium is accompanied by copies of Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" and "Tortilla Flat" and reads:
"'Cannery Row in Monterey in California is
a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of
light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream...
In the morning when the sardine fleet has
made a catch, the purse-seiners waddle
heavily into the bay blowing their whistles."
-Prologue to Cannery Row, John Steinbeck.
John Steinbeck
1902-1968
This legendary author was born in Salinas
John wrote vividly about Monterey, its diverse people
and their intertwined lives. In Cannery Row, he evoked
the Row's sights, sounds and smells and created his own
colorful characters - rather than telling the real-life
stories of hardworking fishermen and cannery workers."
The caption under Steinbeck's photo reads:
"A Nobel Prize winning author, John Steinbeck,
wrote screenplays for movies and musicals,
as well as fiction and scientific journals.
He achieved success by age 33."
Next to the placard is another about his friend Ed Ricketts...a scientist who was also an author.
