Your experiences here today are thanks to extraordinary
philanthropy, beginning with the vision and generosity
of David & Lucile Packard - who paid for the original
building in its entirety. When the aquarium opened on
October 20, 1984, it quickly became a new model for
aquariums worldwide.
David Packard's inquisitive spirit lives on
in high-tech research
David Packard's passion for discovery inspired him to
found our sister institution - the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Research Institute (MBARI) Scientists there explore
the mysteries of the deep sea and develop new tools
to advance ocean science."
