Recalling the operation of all the water-wheels there are in Portugal this is a model to show the way the 'real' ones work. Driven by electricity - many real world ones have been converted from donkey power - water is lifted onto a high level pond by a loop of buckets emptying onto a chute. Meanwhile the arm at the top moves round - that's where the donkey is hitched to. The pond overflows into the lower basin through the fountain nozzles at the other end of the artwork.
