Originally built in 1713 and expanded in 1750 with a one story sheed addition. The roof line was also raised to create a full 2 1/2 story building versus the saltbox style it was. Elisa Smith as the grandson of John Smith who established the first grist mill in Providence. Thomas Appleby married Elisha's daughter Wait in 1787. The house was occupied by the original family member up thru 1959.

Today the home is owned by the Historical Society of Smithfield and open for tours.
