Harsh conditions prevailed. They labored to build railroads, cook, laundry, and more. Some brought herbal knowledge and raised crops. Years later they became merchants and businessmen.
Most were denied or could not afford to bring a wife from China.
Some sent earnings back to China.
There are few acknowledgments to the efforts of these emigrants.
Many died doing high risk (dynamiting) work, landslides, tunneling.
They faced injustice and bigotry and cruelty.
The last Chinese resident in the area , Ah Quong, died July 23 1934.
