Site of a limestone mining operation 1917, removing untold tons of limestone resulting in the upper portion of the hill being for the most part hollowed out. At its peak the 136 acre mine had 2.6 million square feet of tunnels.
The limestone mine was shut down after WWII. In the mid 1960's the abandoned site was used for the commercial production of mushrooms. The man-made caverns were perfect for this endeavor, being a constant 55-56 degree and a ideal high humidity of 85%.
