When the Expo Line opened in December 1985 this was the terminus station of the route. Today it the centre of transit orientated development with four residential towers ranging from 33, 35 to 37 stories.

In 2011 the average daily passenger count at New Westminster Station was 17,324.
When the line opened in December 1985 this section of New Westminster was a run down area with empty lots, drug dealers and prostitutes hung around the stairs up to the station. However in the past 10 years there has been resurgence in the area with residential towers going up along Columbia Street. Presently the site of the New Westminster Station is under revitalization with four residential towers ranging from 33, 35 to 37 stories being constructed.
