St Mary's Churchyard belongs to the church of St Mary-at-the-Walls but in 1978 the parish was united with another church and St Mary's became redundant. In 1980 it opened as the St Mary's Arts Centre or Colchester Arts Centre.

The large part of the churchyard lies to the south of the cormer church building. The main entrance to the churchyard is to the west of the building's tower close to what was the entrance to the church. A notice on the railings (see photos) advises that the churchyard is closed from 6pm to 10am.
Close to the south west corner of the church is a cross that has the following words at its base:
Grenville Turner Brunwin-Hales
Hon Canon of Chelmsford
for 35 years. Rector of this parish.
Born at Birstwith, Yorks, Nov 23rd 1859.
Died at Colchester Sep 28th 1932.
