The cemetery is named after Toussaint L'ouverture, who led Haiti's independence from France in 1804, and who served as an inspiration for those enslaved in the United States.

Graves date from 1869, and include veterans from both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam.

There are many ex-slave markers as well.
