In 1898 the United States Army acquired 35 British QF 4.7-inch guns; these were designated "4.72-inch Armstrong guns". Two of these guns were placed Battery Bingham as part of the Endicott system to protect Charleston harbor. These guns could fire a 45-pound projectile 5.7 miles. Their main purpose was to protect the mine fields from mine sweepers.
This gun probably had a splinter shield that is now missing.
