This large relief depicts a Franciscan friar sitting with a book...presumably a Bible and reading a passage to a young Indian woman who has a young child at her feet. Two male Indians are depicted on either side and the big sailing ship is the distance. No artist is presented but underneath the inscription reads:

"Espanoles en America

IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1948
THE INSTITUTE OF HISPANIC CULTURE
OF MADRID OFFERS THIS MONUMENT
IN COMMEMORATION OF THE MISSIONARY
LABORS OF SPAIN IN CALIFORNIA"
