In the name of the village, "cop" is an old English word for "head", i.e. "[be]headed oak" = "pollarded oak".
This oak tree, last copted in 2000, is a replacement for the original copt oak that was near the church that gave rise to the village name.
A plaque near the tree tells us:
"The original copt oak was situated
to the west of the church.
This tree which was donated by
Mr and Mrs Ivan Danvers
was planted as a sapling in 1987
to commemorate the 150th anniversary
of St Peters Church
It was copted on 20th April 2000
as a memorial to the
Rev, Canon C. A. Paddock (1939 - 2000)
This plaque was given by Mrs Audrey Paddock."
