Hard to imagine the Civil War in California, but yes, folks took sides. Gold was important to the Union especially and units were formed to escort it and guard it.

The cannon was purchased and donated by Dr. E G Bryant of an Francisco and brought to Downieville July 1, 1862. It overlooks the town. (NO turns from the southbound lanes!)
There is a turnout for the NE bound lane.
The cannon was fired for a celebration once and misfired. It will probably not happen again. It t2.akes a cannon ball about 5 inches in diameter.
