The Civilian Conservation Corps was responsible for the construction of many of the buildings still used today in Whitewater State Park. Two CCC camps opened in 1934, one of which stayed until the following year. In 1936 a “transient” WPA group completed the unfinished work; and the buildings were later used to house German prisoners of war during World War II. The stone used was native limestone.
Structures remaining include picnic shelters, dam and swimming area with beach house, drinking fountains, foot bridges, entrance signs bath houses, pump house, retaining walls, and a caretaker’s cabin.
