Fastened to a shiny pink granite marker, this plaque is dedicated to pioneer Thomas Mitchell, the first settler in this county. The marker reads:

Thomas Mitchell built the first settler’s cabin in Polk County in 1844 on this site. Revered for his honesty and generosity, he was prominent in Polk County and Iowa history.

Presented in 1976 by the Mitchellville Lions Club.
