Die Coburger Wettersäule wurde am 29. August 1882 auf Betreiben des Coburger meteorologischen Comite's am Schlossplatz errichtet. Der Entwurf dafür stammt vom Coburger Stadtbaurat Julius Martinet, er wurde vom Bildhauer Heinrich Scheler in Alslebener Sandstein ausgeführt. Die als neugotischer Pfeiler auf quadratischem Sockel mit gekehlter Plinthe stehende Wettersäule zeigt (erneuert) die geographischen Ortsdaten, ein Thermometer, ein Barometer, ein Hygrometer, eine Uhr und auf einem Spitztürmchen eine Wetterfahne mit der Darstellung des Gottes Poseidon.
1977 wurden neue Instrumente eingebaut. Nachdem ein Auto die Säule beschädigt hatte, wurde sie in den 1980er Jahren (unsachgemäß) instandgesetzt, so daß 2008 eine erneute Renovierung der unter Denkmalschutz stehenden Wettersäule notwendig wurde.

The Coburg weather column was erected on the Palace Square on August 29, 1882 at the instigation of the Coburg meteorological committee. The design came from the Coburg city planner Julius Martinet, it was accomplished by the sculptor Henry Scheler in Alslebener Sandstone. The Neo-Gothic pillar stands on a square base with grooved plinth, the weather column shows (renewed) geographical location data, a thermometer, a barometer, a hygrometer, a clock and on the pinnacle a weathervane depicting the god Poseidon.
In 1977 new instruments were installed. Once a car had damaged the column, it was (improperly) restored in the 1980s, so in 2008 a further renovation of the listed monument was necessary.
