Many of John Steinbeck's books are centered in Monterey. One of those books is Tortilla Flat which is a story about a group of usually drunk but amiable "paesanos" who get themselves into a series of curious problems.
In one passage, Danny is put in the jail for a month.... and catches bedbugs...squashing them on the wall...and naming them after the members of the City Council. A sign is on display in one of the jail cells quoting this passage with a mannequin in the cell bed depicting Danny.
