"Ihr weithin sichtbares Kennzeichen ist das pyramidenförmige Zeltdach. An vielen Stellen im Alten Testament ist vom Zelt die Rede, galt es doch den ursprünglich nomadisch lebenden Israeliten als Inbegriff von Schutz und Gastfreundschaft. In der nachkonziliaren Zeit ist das Zelt das Symbol schlechthin für das pilgernde Gottesvolk, unterwegs zur ewigen Heimat.

Die moderne Kirche St. Josef bildet einen reizvollen Kontrast zu der nahe stehenden ursprünglichen Pfarrkirche St. Jakob. Die 1873 eingeweihte neugotische Kirche mit ihren etwa 200 Sitzplätzen war in den sechziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts für den aufstrebenden Ort Ihrlerstein deutlich zu klein geworden. Der Bau der neuen Pfarrkirche jedoch ging nicht ohne Widerstände und Probleme vor sich, erschien ihr Konzept doch vielen geradezu unerhört modern.

Vor allem der Tatkraft und Entschlossenheit von Pfarrer Dieter Knickenberg (1965 – 1971) ist es zu danken, dass die Kirche in dieser Form allen Widerständen und technischen Problemen zum Trotz gebaut wurde. Sie ist ein frühes Werk der beiden Architekten Kurt und Klaus Oberberger aus Regensburg, denen ihr Onkel, Josef Oberberger, Professor an der Kunstakademie München, beratend zur Seite stand. Den Zugang zum kirchlichen Bereich, dem Pfarrplatz, bildet an der Nordseite ein freistehender Glockenturm, der als Eingangsportal gestaltet ist. Die drei Glocken, Maria, Josef und Jakobus geweiht, stammen aus der Glockengießerei Perner in Passau. Die Glockenweihe fand am 12. Juni 1978 statt.

The highly visible indicator of the church is the pyramidal tent roof. In many places in the Old Testament from tents are mentioned, the tent was for nomadic Israelites protection and hospitality. In the post-conciliar period the tent is the symbol par excellence of the pilgrim people of God, go to the eternal home.

The modern church of St. Joseph forms a delightful contrast to the related original parish church of St. Jakob. The 1873 inaugurated Gothic church with about 200 seats was much too small for the emerging location Ihrlerstein in the sixties of the 20th century. The construction of the new parish church, however, was not without resistance and problems because of the modern concept.

Especially the will and determination of Pastor Dieter Knickenberg (1965 - 1971) brought the church in this form to life. It is an early work of the architect Kurt and Klaus Oberberger from Regensburg, where her uncle, Josef Oberberger, professor at the Munich Art Academy stood as advisory aside. Access to the church area leeds through a free-standing bell tower, which is designed as an entrance portal. The three bells, Mary, Joseph and James ordained are from the Bell Foundry Perner in Passau. The bell was consecrated on June 12, 1978th.
