What is EarthKind no fertilizer, no pesticides, no deadheading; these fragrant flowers have been irrigated only three times this year.
The Farmers Branch garden is the largest Earth-Kind trial in the nation, with 400 plants. That's 100 different cultivars, replicated four times.
Roses that make the grade in Farmers Branch will go on to statewide trials. The overarching project will produce a big list that various U.S. regions can adapt for their climates.
The Farmers Branch roses not only stand up to Southern heat and drought, they're winter-hardy as well.
The Farmers Branch trial garden was laid out to take advantage of a gentle north-to-south slope toward Rawhide Creek a stone's. Rows of mulched beds were planted as on a terrace to make the most of rainwater.
Each rosebush was allowed a space 8 by 10 feet. Lawn paths separate the beds, providing air circulation and full access to visitors, including volunteers who adopt plots and pull weeds.
The beds get full sun all year, but moisture is conserved with a thick mulch layer of native hardwood chips donated by arborists. The trial garden has four specimens of each type of rose, in randomized plots.
The roses are heritage and antique specimens. Suppliers were mainly Chamblee's Rose Nursery in Tyler and Antique Rose Emporium near Brenham.
Many of them were found in old cemeteries where they'd been neglected for generations.
