Les chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem ou Johanites, fondèrent à la fin du XIIe siècle un premier établissement hospitalier. Pris à partie par le clergé local qui y voyait une forme de concurrence, les chevaliers de Saint-Jean ne finirent par s’imposer qu’après le soutien en 1227 du pape Grégoire IX à leur ordre. L’église fut consacrée en 1268 par Albert le Grand, théologien dominicain. Sans cesse sur le déclin à partir de 1530, l’ancienne commanderie de Saint-Jean fut vendue en 1796. Rachetée en 1858 par les sœurs de la Divine Providence de Ribeauvillé, elle fut transformée en un établissement scolaire, toujours présent, qui prit le nom d’Institut Saint-Jean en 1918. Suite à des réaménagements au XIXe siècle, il ne subsiste du bâtiment original que quelques éléments de façades.

The Knights of St. John of Jerusalem or Johanites, founded in the late twelfth century first hospital. The church was consecrated in 1268 by Albert the Great, Dominican theologian . Constantly on the decline from 1530, the Commandery of Saint John was sold in 1796. Bought in 1858 by the Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé, it was converted into a school , always present , who took the name of St. John Institute in 1918. Following redevelopment in the nineteenth century , all that remains of the original building facades that some elements.
