Located outside the entrance to the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park, the plaque accompanying this display indicates in part:
"CONVAIR SEA DART
EXPERIMENTAL SUPERSONIC SEAPLANE
A total of five Sea Darts were built in San Diego, California by
Covair for the U.S. Navy, but only three were ever flown. The first
successful flight took place on San Diego Bay April 9, 1953. The
final open-sea test occured January 16, 1956. Shortly thereafter,
the Sea Dart test program was discontinued. Nevertheless, the
program proved the feasibility of supersonic water-based aircraft."
