Most San Diegan's only know of this organ as the instrument in "The Organ Pavilion"-- which was dedicated in 1914 for the Panama-California Exposition.
A sign at the pavilion informs us about the instrument (see WM9CN7)
""SPRECKELS ORGAN PAVILION
The Speckels Organ and Pavilion were donated to the
City of San Diego by John D. and Adolph Spreckels and
dedicated December 21, 1914 preceding the formal
opening of the Panama-California Exposition. The unique
outdoor Spreckels Organ Pavilion was designed by Los
Angeles architect Harrison Albright. The organ was built
Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut. It
originally contained 52 ranks and by 1996 had grown to
73 ranks or over 4,500 pipes ranging in length from 32 feet
to 'about the size of a pencil'. The Spreckels Organ , one
of a few municipally owned and operated organs in
continuous use, is one of the great concert organs of the
world, capable of the full range of musical masterworks."
