This water tower is located in a former warehouse district of Fayetteville. Close by highways and rail service made it an ideal place to store agricultural products such as cotton prior to shipment to manufacturers near and far. One of the peculiarities of store cotton is that it drys out the air in the warehouse rapidly. Water was needed to be readily available to replinish water barrels to keep humidity up and be ready for any fire that breaks out. The dry air makes a fire more able to be kindled amid the dry bales of cotton. Owners, Cotton Growers Coop, of the warehouse sort of hedge their bets by having their own water tower to store water in event of fire.
