Located in the Elephant Odyssey area of the San Diego Zoo, and surrounded by several sculptures of extinct animals from North America, the placard accompanying this sculpture reads:
"Extinct Columbian Mammoth
During the Pleistocene, herds of these ancient
elephants lived and grazed in Southern
California. They were larger than their living
relatives but probably behaved much the
same.
