The cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Netherlands. Originally this was the cemetery of the church of the city Nijenstede but after the bishop of Utrecht , Jan van Arkel , the city charter handed to Hardenberg, moved the bulk of the population. But they kept the dead buried in this cemetery and it still bears the name Nijenstede, whether it is called popularly known as "the old cemetery. The church has long stood in the cemetery, but it was demolished in 1653. According to writers of that time was the church when of 'miraculous antiquity."
The cemetery is now at the mall to Hardenberg. Hardenberg derived from the politician Jan Weitkamp was buried late 1946 in the cemetery. The cemetery was designated in 2002 as a municipal monument.
