[DE] "Das Monument General Hoche steht in Weißenthurm am Rhein, einer Kleinstadt nördlich von Koblenz. Es ist das Grab und Denkmal für den französischen General Louis Lazare Hoche (1768–1797), der während des Ersten Revolutionskriegs am 18. April 1797 von hier aus den Rheinübergang seiner Truppen leitete. Auf der rechtsrheinischen Flussseite besiegte er in der Schlacht von Neuwied ein österreichisches Heer. Fünf Monate später, am 19. September 1797, starb er in Wetzlar an der Lahn.
Es heißt, dieses frühklassizistische Grabdenkmal sei das größte und älteste französische Monument in Deutschland. Das Denkmalsgelände ist seit 1798 Eigentum der Französischen Republik. Seit 1978 darf die Gemeinde Weißenthurm den südlichen Teil davon als städtische Grünanlage nutzen. Seit 1994 ist der gesamte Komplex eine geschützte Denkmalzone.
Das Monument folgt in seiner Gestaltung dem seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts populären Denkmaltyp eines Obelisken auf einem würfelförmigen Sockel: Auf einem aufgeschütteten, abgemauerten Rundhügel mit einem Durchmesser von 32 Metern steht ein dreistufiger Unterbau aus Basaltlavaquadern, untergliedert mit Lichtschächten, der obere in Gestalt eines Sarkophages mit Giebeln und Akrotienbekrönungen. Darüber steht der nach oben sich verjüngende, acht Meter hohe Obelisk. Er trägt auf der dem Rhein zugekehrten Seite in Metallbuchstaben die Inschrift L’ARMEE DE SAMBRE ET MEUSE A SON GENERAL EN CHEF HOCHE. Der innen hohle Obelisk wurde mit Lahnmarmor aus Villmar von dem Steinmetz Simon Leonhard II. verkleidet."

It is the grave and memorial to the French General Louis Lazare Hoche (1768-1797), who headed here from the Rhine crossing his troops during the First Revolutionary War on April 18 1797th On the right bank side of the river he defeated at the Battle of Neuwied an Austrian army. Five months later, on September 19, 1797 he died in Wetzlar on the Lahn.
It is said that this early classicist grave monument is the largest and oldest French Monument in Germany. The memorial site is the French Republic since 1798 property. Since 1978, the municipality Weißenthurm may use the southern part of the urban park. Since 1994, the whole complex is a protected monument zone.
The monument follows in its design since the end of the 18th century popular monument obelisk on a cube-shaped base: On a banked, abgemauerten round hill with a diameter of 32 meters is a three-step base made Basaltlavaquadern, subdivided with light shafts, the top in the form of a sarcophagus with gables and Akrotienbekrönungen. Furthermore is the upward tapered, eight-meter high obelisk. It carries on the Rhine side facing in metal letters the inscription L'Army of Sambre-et-Meuse A SON GENERAL DE CHEF HOCHE. The internally hollow obelisk was covered with Lahnmarmor from Villmar of the stonemason Simon Leonhard II."
