In Waltham, on the Waltham Common, is this memorial dedicated to Christopher Columbus - or was it Christofer Columbus?

The monument is near the south west corner of the common, on a slope that gently rises as you continue north. The main part of the monument faces the corner.

On the face is an image of Columbus, as well as an image of one of the ships that made the first crossing, and a globe showing the routes of the trips that he made. The text is as follows:

"A quincentennial commemoration to Chrostopher Columbus..."

If you look at the area around 'Christopher,' you will notice that something isn't quite right. On closer inspection, you can see that the stone has been carved and then filled and carved again. Most likely, where the 'H' is, was an 'F.' You can see that the letters were moved over to make room for the 'PH.'
