The Denton Historical Society has a marker at the entrance to the second incarnation of the Sherman Building, noting the property's history at 101-103 Elm Street on the historic courthouse square.

The marker has the Denton Historic Landmark emblem on it, with the following text:

The Sherman Building
101-103 North Elm

Situated on the last of the public square lots sold in January 1857, the Sherman Building rises from the rubble to commemorate the site's prominent history as the place from which "The Great Fire of 1860" originated. After Mr. J.M. Smoot's store was reduced to ashes, the site became home to a large dry goods store and then, subsequently, housed several business firms, one of which belonged to one of Denton's most prestigious businessmen and elected officials, J.M. Blount. The brick building at the 101 site was constructed around 1880, making it one of the first brick buildings in Denton. These two buildings were joined in the 1920s, giving the appearance of a single structure. In September 1994 another fire razed the structures on both lots. This new building salutes the architecture and sense of community that evolved from those businesses of yesterday. 13 March 1997
