The village of Fornalutx was originally founded during the period when the Moors controlled the island.
"The church was founded around 1229 after the Spanish reconquered the island. It underwent a major renovation in 1639 and this date is carved on a stone cross above the main entrance to the church on Carrer de l'Eglisia."

The side of the church has a smaller entrance with a statue of Madonna and child above it. It is this side of the church that overlooks the Placa d'Espanya, the main square of the village.
The town has a Stations of The Cross trail, with small ceramic plaques set into building walls. The trail leads to the side entrance of the church with the last one next to the statue of the Madonna and Child.
Like most churches on the island it is only open for worship and the inside cannot be visited at other times.
