A grade II* listed building built in 1799 for Mrs Elizabeth Allanson of Studley Royal, to a design by James Wyatt. Mrs Allanson’s descendsant, the First Marquess of Ripon, donated the building to the Corporation to commemorate the Marquess’s mayoralty in 1895-6.
The front façade of the building carries a frieze that reads
"EXCEPT YE LORD KEEP YE CITTIE YE WAKEMAN WAKETH IN
VAIN".
The plaque reads :-
“This building, housing public assembly and reading rooms, was designed by James Wyatt in 1798. The Corporation met here in the 19th century and in 1897 the Marquess of Ripon gave it to the City as the Town Hall.”
