Audrey Munson was born in Rochester, New York in 1891. She began life in Mexico, New York, but moved to Rhode Island with her mother, after her parents divorced. Her beauty quickly launched her career as a model, posing for statues, monuments, starring in silent films, even being the first woman to pose nude in a feature film. She is also credited with being the model who posed for the image on both the Walking Liberty quarter and the Mercury dime. When her modelling career began to lose public interest, she attempted suicide. Her Mother had her committed to an institution in 1931, on her 30th birthday. She continued to live in this institution until her death at age 104, on February 20th, 2006. The community of New Haven conducted several fund raising events in order to provide her a grave marker, and rallied together and managed to get a historical plaque in her honor, placed at the entrance to the New Haven Rural Cemetery.
