On the west side of the railroad tracks on First Street, this elevator/mill is located just east of the Farmers Grain Company building. The elevator has two 80-ft. towers. No grain has been delivered here for the last several years, and there are no commercial grain elevators currently operating in Oklahoma County. The Farmers Grain Company has continued to operate at the retail building west of the elevator until January 2016, as a farm store, nursery and garden center. The building is currently being remodeled and will soon open as the Farmers Grain Cafe.
A bronze plaque mounted on the north side of the retail building reads:
This was the first elevator and mill erected in Oklahoma.
It was built by Jim Snyder in 1891. Capacity was 80,000 bushels.
Mr. Snyder continued the business until is death in 1895.In 1920 the firm went broke. A group of farmers formed a
corporation in 1922 and opened as Farmers Grain Company.
In 1924 E.H. Sherman was hired as manager.
The elevator burned in 1949 but was quickly rebuilt.
