Vers le XIe siècle,mais rien n'est certain sur ce point,car il se pourrait bien que ce fut au XIVe ou au XVe siècle,un troupeau paissait dans les prés de la forêt de la calm sous la surveillance d'un bouvier.celui-ci avait remarqué qu'un taureau s'esquivait fréquemment et se rendait près d'une fontaine,creusant le sol avec fougue et poussant des beuglements puissants, excédé le bouvier allait un jour déchaîner contre lui sa fureur et ses coups mais,en observant le manège du taureau,il découvrit près de la fontaine,dans une cavité,l'image de la vierge que le taureau lui avait tant de fois signalée en vain.il s'agissait d'une statuette de bois d'une soixantaine de centimètres de haut qui fut immédiatement transportée en grande pompe dans l'église d'odeillo en attendant qu'une chapelle soit érigée sur le lieu même de la découverte,ce qui se fera au XVIIe siècle.et depuis,le dimanche le plus proche du 8 septembre,lors de la fête qui réunit l'ensemble des fidèles du diocèse,on descend en procession la vierge de font-romeu vers l'églisse d'odeillo où elle restera tout l'hivers.elle remontera dans la chapelle de l'ermitage à la trinité.
le visage de la vierge,autrefois noir,a reçu en 1664,comme le constate le livre des comptes qui se trouve aux archives paroissiales d'odeillo,une coloration naturelle.
