Mercurius (eingedeutscht Merkur) war ein Gott in der römischen Religion. Sein Name geht auf das lateinische Wort merx, Ware, zurück. Er wurde mit dem griechischen Hermes gleichgesetzt. Dessen Herkunft und übrige Eigenschaften wurden auf ihn übertragen. Er gilt als der „Götterbote“, Gott der Händler und Diebe.

Die Statue wurde zum Anlass des 350jährigen Jubiläums der Handelskammer 2015 vom Künstler Wolfgang Matzat erschaffen.

Mercury is a major Roman god, being one of the Dii Consentes within the ancient Roman pantheon. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages/communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld.
