This replica is located in the Rare Books room on the 9th floor at the San Diego Central Library.
The Rosetta Stone is inscribed with a decree from the Pharoah Ptolemy V in 196 BC. It is written in three languages- ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, ancient Greek and Demotic (another Egyptian language). The stone was moved and used as a building material for Fort Julien centuries before it was rediscovered by a French soldier in 1799. The Stone came into British hands two years later when the British defeated the French in Alexandria. During the next two decades, study of the Stone permitted the first decipherment of the Egyptian hieroglyphs.
