In the fall of 1929, Conrad Hilton began the construction of this high-rise hotel. Nineteen days later the stock market
crashed and the Great Depression began. Despite this, the
hotel opened on November 30, 1930.

The Plaza Hotel is significant because it is one of El Paso’s
early steel frame, high-rise setback structures designed by
architect Henry C. Trost. The style is Art Deco, and the
exterior remains largely unaltered from its original form. The
hotel was sold in 1963 and renamed the Plaza Hotel.
