Tall Oaks Trail (.5 miles)

During the depression years of the 1930's, the 808th Company of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was located in the park. From 1934 to 1943, young men between the ages of 18-24 lived and worked daily in the park. They built parking areas, roads, campgrounds, wading pools, bridges and planted a variety of trees throughout the park. We continue to enjoy and benefit from their hard work and the improvements that helped beautify this national park. Take note of the stone work to the left and behind you, these are the remains of old picnic fire pits from the CCC period. Imagine the family gatherings, the delicious smell of camp cooked food and the laughter ringing out from this subtle bend in the Travertine Creek.

[There is an inset photo of CCC workers pouring the concrete ring at Buffalo Springs, c. 1933-1934.]
