In Keene, on the town common within Central Square, is this Civil War memorial known as the Soldiers Monument, listed in the Smithsonian Art and Sculpture Inventory.
The monument is on the south side of the common, which is the hub of the rotary at Central Square. It is surrounded by an iron fence and bushes. The base is made of granite and is 11 ft. 8 in. x 7 1/2 ft. x 7 1/2 ft. (from the inventory page). The sculpture is a bronze cast roughly life-sized, of a soldier. He is in a long coat with a cape. His right hand is holding the barrel of a rifle, with the butt on the ground.

(On proper right side of self-base:) M. Milmore/Sculptor. Made at the/Ames Foundry/Chicopee, Mass. (On bronze plaque on front of base:) KEENE/WILL CHERISH IN PERPETUAL HONOR/THE MEMORY OF HER SONS/WHO FOUGHT FOR LIBERTY/AND THE INTEGRITY OF THE/REPUBLIC/ 1861-1865/THE HONOR/OF THE HEROIC DEAD/IS THE INSPIRATION OF/POSTERITY signed Founder's mark appears.
More Detailed Description (from Inventory Page):
Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform, a long, belted overcoat and cap. He has a moustache. A bayonet hangs on the proper left side of the belted coat. A large pouch hangs from a strap over his proper left shoulder. A medallion shaped like an eagle decorates the strap. He holds the muzzle of a rifle with his proper right hand; the butt of the gun rests on the ground by his proper left foot. The bronze sculpture stands atop a granite base. The die of the base is topped by a moulded cornice; the sides of the die are paneled. The base ends in four steps.
The monument was in good condition. The bronze base had a few minor marks on it.
