The hospital was founded and endowed in 1672 by Zacharias Jepson, an apothecary of York who was born in Ripon. The hospital was intended to educate twenty orphan boys between the ages of seven and fifteen and a half. The original hospital used Jepson’s own home.
The foundation stone for the modern hospital building was laid in 1878 by the Marchioness of Ripon. The modern building was funded by public subscription and cost £1500.
The plaque reads :-
This was Jepson's Hospital, a "Bluecoat School" for poor boys of Ripon, endowed by Zacarias Jepson in 1672. The school, rebuilt in 1878, was closed in 1927 and the foundation changed to an educational trust.
