The succession of Elizabeth I as Queen of England was disputed by the followers of her sister Mary Queen of Scots. Many English catholics, particularly in the North of England supported Mary’s claim to the throne.
A rebellion ensued led by the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland. In November 1569 they occupied Durham and celebrated Mass in Durham cathedral. From Durham the rebels marched South towards York, but diverted to Barnard Castle. On the 13 December the Earl of Sussex marched out of York to oppose the rebellion on behalf of Elizabeth I. The rebels were routed and fled to Scotland.
The Earl of Northumberland was captured by the Earl of Morton and was handed over to Queen Elizabeth’s forces in 1572. He was subsequently beheaded in York. The Earl of Westmorland escaped to Flanders, where he died in poverty. In total 600 supporters of the rebellion were executed.
In 1587 Mary Queen of Scots was put on trial for treason and executed.
The plaque reads :-
The Rising of the North In November 1569, hundreds of rebels assembled in this Market Place with the aim of re-establishing Catholic worship in the North. They swiftly captured Barnard Castle on the River Tees and widely reinstated the Mass, but by January the rebellion had failed and great numbers had been hanged here and elsewhere as traitors.
